The Circle of Friends

On May 11, 2006 at 7 p.m. there will be an Appreciation Dinner at the Little Siisters for the members of the Circle of Friends. Over one hundred people attended it last year and were able to take tours around the home to meet some of the Residents and see firsthand how their contributions were being used.

At last year's finner, we learned about some of the extraordinary ecperiences Sisters from this order have had. Little Sisters from Britain and America surviveed concentration camps and Nazi rule in France during World War II. In China, before the rise on communism, Little Sisters faced persecution from the government. Their habits were taken away and people attempted to force them away from the elderly poor they were caring for. Instead of buckling under pressure, the Little Sisters stood their ground and stayed to care for and protect their Residents. One of our own Sisters, Sr. Maria Ann, experienced an extreme situation where her devotion to the elderly she'd promised to care for was challenged. During her nine-year stay caring for the poor in the Congo, Sr. Maria Ann found herself and her fellow Sisters trapped between two warring tribes. Violence ran rampant and one Resident was even killed by a bomb while preaying in the chapel. When the opportunity was presented for the Sisters to escape the dangerous environment without their elderly Residents, they refused, remaining loyal to their vows. They stayed and survived, amidst murders and kidnappings and a complete lack of justice. Sr. Maria Ann eventually left after contracting Malaria. These few tales are only a handful of the millions of tales of love and devotion women from this order have shown over the years since the Blessed Jeanne Jugan took in her first elderly woman. We are truly blessed to have them with us here in Evansville.

How Can You Help?

Gatherings for this year are already being scheduled. If you would like to host a dinner or cocktail party, please call our Development Director, Julie Welch, at (812) 464-3607. It's a wonderful way to meet new people and help a very worthy cause that has been serving Evansville and the rest of the Tri-State for over one hundred years.

Our Goal...

In 2005, the Circle of Friends, consisting of 101 members, brought $176,000 to St. John's Home for the Aged. In 2006, we hope to welcome 200 members into our Circle of Friends. These members are true leaders if the community by supporting one of Evansville's most valuable organizations. The Little Sisters and the Advisory Board believe the Circle of Friends is the most important fundraising tool we have to sustain St. John’s Home for the Aged in the future.

Our giving levels for Circle of Friends are:

Circle of Love $5,000 and above

Circle of Mercy $2,500 - $4,999

Circle of Hospitality $1,000 - $2,499

About The Circle…

The Little Sisters Circle of Friends is a group of individuals who understand that as God’s children we are all brothers and sisters, and thus have a responsibility to care for each other and to make a difference in our world. The Circle was created to involve the Tri-State’s most capable and caring community members to help sustain the home and act as advocates for the work of the Little Sisters. These members are leaders in our community who have the ability to inspire others. Each member of the Circle of Friends believes in the mission of the Little Sisters of the Poor and has helped us promote the dignity and care of the elderly by offering financial support to St. John’s Home for the Aged. We extend our sincere gratitude to the many generous benefactors who make it possible for us to continue our ministry. It is a blessing to have friends who share with us a deep belief in the dignity of every human life and a desire to assist those who are less fortunate in the most valuable phases of their lives.
